Welcome!
North Carolina Views of the Vineyard |
We invite you to share a journey with us over the next 365 days and beyond as we tell the story of the North Carolina Fine Wines Competition.
One year from today, on February 18th, 2017, the first annual North Carolina Fine Wines Gala will be held in Winston-Salem, NC. Surrounded by people who both make and enjoy wine, the winning wines will be announced.
So to get the juice flowing - let's give a little foundation as to what this is all about.

WHO:
We are the North Carolina Fine Wines Society. We'll introduce you to some talented people in the North Carolina fine wines industry as we move throughout the year, and you'll get to know all about what we're trying to achieve.
WHAT:
Our story is a great one to tell. North Carolina's Fine Wines is a comeback story, an adventure, a love story, and an epic.
What are Fine Wines? Fine Wines are those wines are made from Vinifera and Hybrid Grapes. These are the wines you find at restaurants and on wine shelves around the world. Vinifera varietals include favorites like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio. Examples of Hybrids are Vidal Blanc, Traminette, Chambourcin, Chardonel, and Marechal Foch.

Prior to Prohibition, North Carolina was the largest producer of wine in the United States. The years leading up to Prohibition saw the decline of this industry, only to be supplemented with tobacco and other crops. It would be 43 years after Prohibition ended that the first winery was established in North Carolina in 1976. Now 40 years later, we're back in the game.
WHERE:
The North Carolina Fine Wines Competition will take place in North Carolina. Those wines in the Competition must meet 3 criteria:
- Vinifera or Hybrid Varietals
- 100% NC grown and vinified (made into wine) in North Carolina
- A minimum of 15 cases available for the public as of 2/18/2017
The Awards Gala will be held in Winston-Salem on February 18, 2017. That night winners will be announced and both the vineyards and the consumers will hear what 12 wines will make up the 2017 North Carolina Fine Wines Case.
HOW:
We will have Master and Advanced Sommeliers judging the wines. Their knowledge will help guide both the consumers and vintners on how NC wines are performing.

The judging will take place in late January or early February in 2017. After the Gala in Winston-Salem, our wines be taking a victory lap around the state with our Showcase events in the Asheville, Triangle and Charlotte areas.
WHY:
North Carolina is stepping back into the spotlight to rightfully claim its place as a premiere location for wine and wine tourism. With wineries stretching from the Coast to the Mountains and the foothills and plains in between, there is opportunity for all of us to enjoy the wines and wineries. Through the monies raised from competition, we will be providing scholarships to support students pursuing degrees in enology, viticulture, and wine related hospitality and agri-tourism activities.
